“McGill Owes You Money! / "McGill vous doit de l'argent!" - Retroactive raises for TAs

la version française à suivre

The TA bargaining committee signed a new collective bargaining agreement with McGill on 23 December, 2020. That agreement will expire in summer 2023, but it includes wage increases going back two years. TAs had been in negotiations since the expiration of our last CBA in summer 2018. Normally, TA wages would increase annually but since we had not negotiated the wage increases yet, TAs continued to be paid $29.33. Now that TAs have signed a new collective bargaining agreement with McGill, McGill will start issuing retroactive wage increases for two lapsed raises. Read below to find out more.

How much has the wage increased? Before we signed the new CBA, the TA wage rate remained at $29.33, the rate set at the last increase in January, 2018. The new CBA includes two retroactive wage increases:

Who is eligible to receive retroactive wage increases? For TA wages earned from January, 2019 to April, 2020, retroactive raises are owed to those who were still affiliated with McGill as a student or employee in W2020. For TA wages earned from May, 2020 to December, 2020, all TAs who worked during those semesters are eligible for retroactive pay. These criteria are determined by a memorandum of agreement between the union and McGill, and include the following conditions:

How will I know if I will receive retroactive pay? McGill has sent the union a list of everyone who is currently set to receive retroactive pay. AGSEM will send an email to each individual on this list to confirm. The Executive Committee is also in the process of analysing our hiring data to verify that McGill’s list is correct and identify anyone who has been left out.

What do I need to do in order to receive the retroactive pay that is owed to me? All retro payments will be made via direct deposit, which must be set up through Workday. If you are an active employee, you should see the retroactive pay in Workday by March 23. If you have not been an employee since the transition to Workday, then McGill will contact you to set up a Workday profile.

As union members know all too well, we have to be vigilant in order to make sure that our employer follows through on our agreements. AGSEM needs all members to be proactive in reviewing the status of their retro pay so the grievance officer can bring all problems to McGill as soon as possible.
