Unit 2 Bargaining Update #1: A better contract for invigilators - It’s not too much to ask!
It was great to see so many of you at our tabling sessions!
At assemblies in April and November, invigilators voted on a bargaining mandate. We have been working hard to turn this mandate into a bargaining proposal over the last few months and we informed McGill back in September that we were ready to bargain. After our Collective Agreement expired on December 1, we finally heard back from McGill that they will be ready to bargain in early 2026.
We are bargaining for a wage for invigilators that brings us to the level of pay at other universities! Invigilators at the University of Toronto make over $50 per hour! At Université de Montréal, invigilators are paid over $27 per hour! Having faced record inflation and cost-of-living increases over the past few years, $18 an hour is just not cutting it.
We’re also bargaining to require McGill to hire more invigilators. Across the university, invigilators report being short-staffed. This makes shifts more stressful than they have to be and can lead to invigilators feeling like they can’t take their breaks. We’ll be fighting for a minimum of invigilators to be hired based on the number of students they are invigilating.
We’ll also be fighting for improvements to our work conditions in other ways: not having to input hours on Workday, requiring McGill to provide coffee and snacks during shifts, making the process of shift allocation more fair, and more!
As we enter this new bargaining period, we want YOU to be part of the process.
